The right iridium spark plug for your car in India is the one NGK specifies for your exact engine, and on most cars that is a set of three or four, from about ₹366 a plug. An iridium plug uses a centre electrode around a quarter the thickness of a standard one, so it fires a stronger spark at a lower voltage and holds that spark for far longer. On a modern petrol car running E20 that matters more than it used to. This guide lists the correct plug for every car we stock, explains the one Maruti mistake that can genuinely damage an engine, and tells you honestly where no iridium option exists.

How many spark plugs does my car need?

One per cylinder. That is the whole rule, and it is why every plug on this page is sold in packs.

  • Three-cylinder (most modern 1.0 and 1.2 petrols: Swift, Baleno, Dzire, WagonR, Celerio, Fronx, Nios, Venue 1.0): 3 plugs.
  • Four-cylinder (City, Verna, Elantra, Innova, Corolla, Ciaz, most older 1.2s and all 1.5s and above): 4 plugs.
  • Six-cylinder (Skoda Superb 2.8 V6): 6 plugs.

Always change the full set together. A single fresh plug alongside three worn ones gives you an engine running four different combustion characteristics, which is worse for smoothness than leaving all four alone.

The Maruti 1.2 trap, and why it matters

This is the single most common expensive mistake in Indian spark plugs, so it is worth two minutes of your time.

Maruti has used three completely different 1.2 petrol engines, and they take three different plugs. The badge on the boot does not tell you which one you have. The year does.

  • K12M, roughly 2014 to 2022: Baleno from Oct 2015, Swift from Oct 2014, Dzire from Feb 2015, WagonR 1.2 from Jan 2019, Ciaz 1.2 up to Jul 2018, and the Ignis throughout. Takes the LKR7BIX-P.
  • K12N DualJet, roughly 2019 onward: Swift from Feb 2021, Dzire from Mar 2020, Baleno from Feb 2022, WagonR from Feb 2022. Takes the ILZKR6F11.
  • Z12E, the three-cylinder from 2024: Swift from May 2024, Dzire from Nov 2024. Takes the ILKAR7Z11S.

The part that can actually damage an engine is reach. Reach is how far the threaded section extends into the cylinder head, and it is not adjustable.

  • Maruti 1.2 engines from roughly October 2014 onward use a 26.5mm reach plug, the LKR family.
  • Swift and Dzire built before that, and every K15B 1.5 car (S-Cross 1.5, Ertiga, XL6 1.5, Ciaz 1.5, Jimny) use a 19mm reach plug.

Fit a 26.5mm plug into a head designed for 19mm and the plug protrudes into the combustion chamber where nothing should be. At best it runs badly. At worst it contacts the piston. These are not interchangeable, whatever a marketplace listing tells you. If you are unsure, send us your registration year and we will identify the engine before you order.

One honest note on the LKR7BIX-P

NGK's application chart lists the LKR7BIX-P against Hyundai Kappa and Tata engines, not against Maruti. It fits the Maruti 1.2 K12M perfectly well: same body, same 12mm thread, same 26.5mm reach, same 16mm hex. The difference is heat range. It runs one step colder than the plug NGK nominates for those cars.

Colder is the safe side. A colder plug will not harm your engine, and on a car that sees highway running it is arguably the better plug. The one thing to know is that a colder plug takes longer to burn off deposits, so if your car only ever does short five-minute city trips it can foul sooner than a standard plug would. NGK offers no iridium in that Maruti fitment at all, so this is the only iridium route in, and owners use it exactly that way. We would rather tell you the spec than let you find it out.

Where there is no iridium option, and we will not pretend otherwise

Some engines simply have no iridium plug in the Indian aftermarket. If you own one of these, no amount of searching will find you a genuine NGK iridium, and anyone selling you one should be questioned closely.

  • Maruti K15B 1.5 cars: S-Cross 1.5 from Aug 2020, Ertiga, XL6 1.5, Ciaz 1.5, Brezza 1.5, Jimny. NGK India offers only the KR6A-10 conventional plug for these. The IKR6G11 that search results throw up is real and correct for the car, but it is supplied as a Maruti Genuine part, not through the NGK aftermarket channel, so your route is a Maruti dealer.
  • VW and Skoda 1.5 TSI, and 1.8 / 2.0 TSI: NGK's Indian catalogue does not carry these, so we do not list them rather than sell you something approximate.
  • Hyundai Sonata 2.0 / 2.4: on the chart, but not currently suppliable in India.

Iridium spark plugs and E20 petrol

Upgrade to iridium regardless of what is coming out of the pump. The case for a fine-wire iridium plug has nothing to do with fuel policy. It fires a stronger, more focused spark at a lower voltage and it holds its gap far longer than a nickel plug. That is worth having on E20, on E10, on straight petrol, and on whatever the blending mandate does next. Fuel blends come and go. A plug that lights the mixture cleanly and keeps doing it is simply the better plug, and across the life of a car it is the cheaper one too.

What E20 does is raise the stakes. Ethanol carries less energy per litre than petrol, shifts the mixture slightly leaner and holds moisture. Your ECU compensates, which is why most cars feel fine, but it means the ignition system has less margin than it used to. A set of plugs that were merely getting tired on E10 can show up as a rough idle, a hesitant pull away from a light, or a quiet drop in mileage on E20.

This bites hardest on older cars. A 2012 Swift or a 2010 City was never designed around 20 percent ethanol, and it is running plugs that have had years to erode. That combination is where owners notice E20 most, and a fresh set of correctly specified plugs is the cheapest, most reversible thing you can do about it.

What iridium will not do is fix the rest of what E20 touches: fuel lines, rubber components, the fuel pump and older seals. It takes ignition off the list of possible causes and keeps it off for years, which is worth a great deal when you are trying to work out why a car feels different. Are iridium spark plugs worth it on a car?

Yes, on almost any modern petrol car. Iridium melts at over 2,400°C and is far harder than nickel, so the centre electrode can be made very fine, typically around 0.6mm against roughly 2.5mm on a standard plug. A finer electrode concentrates the spark and needs less voltage to jump the gap, so the coil works less hard and the mixture lights more reliably.

In practice you get easier cold starts, a steadier idle, cleaner low-speed running and fewer of the small misfires that quietly make a car feel tired. What you will not get is meaningful extra power. A spark plug does not add power to a healthy engine, it stops a healthy engine losing it.

The real argument is cost per kilometre. A nickel plug erodes, the gap widens, the coil strains to bridge it, and the engine gets slowly worse over months in a way you stop noticing. An iridium set costs more up front and then holds its specification for far longer, which on a four-cylinder car usually works out cheaper across the life of the plug than replacing nickel twice.

Iridium IX, Iridium MAX, Laser Iridium and Dual Iridium

  • NGK Iridium IX. Iridium centre electrode, nickel ground electrode. NGK's performance upgrade line, and what most older Indian cars in this guide take.
  • NGK Iridium MAX. Iridium centre electrode plus a platinum chip on the ground electrode, so both wearing surfaces are protected. The same dual precious metal build as Laser Iridium, sold as the aftermarket range rather than the factory one. The LKR7BIX-P in the tables above is one of these.
  • NGK Laser Iridium. Iridium centre plus a platinum pad welded to the ground electrode, so both wearing surfaces are protected. Longer life again, and it is usually the original factory fitment on modern cars.
  • NGK Dual Iridium. Iridium on both electrodes, used on engines like the Honda City from 2015.

If your car came with Laser Iridium from the factory, fit Laser Iridium again. Dropping to a cheaper grade than the manufacturer chose is a downgrade, not a saving.

Heat range, and the rule people get backwards

Heat range describes how quickly a plug moves heat out of its tip and into the cylinder head. It has nothing to do with how hot the spark is, which is the most common misunderstanding.

On NGK plugs, a higher number means a colder plug. A BKR6EIX runs colder than a BKR5EIX. Denso numbers its plugs the other way round, which is why cross-brand comparisons trip people up.

Too hot a plug and the tip can glow enough to ignite the mixture before the spark does. That is pre-ignition and it destroys pistons. Too cold and it never gets hot enough to burn off deposits, so it fouls, which is the failure mode for a car that only does short city trips. Match the heat range your manufacturer specified and change nothing else.

How to read an NGK part number

Take BKR6EIX-11:

  • The opening letters describe the physical plug: thread diameter, hex size and whether the insulator is projected.
  • R means resistor. Every modern car needs one. A resistor suppresses the radio-frequency noise the ignition throws out, which your ECU and infotainment both rely on. Every car plug we sell is a resistor type.
  • 6 is the heat range.
  • E is the reach, the dimension that must match exactly.
  • IX marks NGK's Iridium IX line.
  • -11 is the factory gap in tenths of a millimetre, so 1.1mm.

If any of those differ from the plug your car specifies, it is not an upgrade, it is the wrong part.

When should you replace your spark plugs?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual first, because that is what protects your warranty. Beyond the schedule, these are the signs a set is finished:

  • The engine cranks longer than it used to on a cold morning.
  • The idle is rough or uneven, especially with the AC on.
  • A hesitation or flat spot when you pull away or overtake.
  • Mileage creeping down with no other explanation.
  • A misfire code, or the check engine light flashing under load. A flashing light means stop driving and get it checked, because raw fuel reaching a hot catalytic converter is an expensive failure.
  • On inspection: a rounded electrode, a widened gap, black oily fouling or a chalky white tip.

Keep the old plugs and look at all four side by side. If one is markedly different from the rest, that cylinder is telling you something the others are not, and that is worth investigating before you fit the new set.

Fitting: four things that matter

  1. Cold engine only. Aluminium heads and steel plug threads expand at different rates. Removing plugs from a hot head is how threads get pulled, and a re-threaded head is a very expensive lesson.
  2. Leave the gap alone. Iridium plugs come pre-gapped, and the fine centre electrode is not built to be levered against with a feeler gauge. Never apply force to the centre electrode.
  3. Torque properly. Use the figure in your service manual. If you do not have a torque wrench, seat the plug finger-tight until the gasket makes contact, then turn roughly a third of a turn further. Overtightening is far more common and far more expensive than undertightening.
  4. Change the whole set, and while the coil packs are off, look at them. Cracked or oil-soaked coil boots will kill a new set of plugs quickly.

How to choose the right spark plug (fitment guidance)

  1. Identify the engine, not the model name. Swift, City and Baleno have each had multiple engines with different plugs.
  2. Use the registration year as your first filter, then confirm the engine code.
  3. Match reach and heat range exactly. This is not the place to experiment.
  4. Count your cylinders and order the right pack size.
  5. Buy the grade your car came with, or better, never worse.

Are iridium spark plugs worth it for a car?

Which spark plug does my Maruti Swift use?

It depends on the engine, not the badge. A Swift built from around October 2014 to early 2021 uses the K12M engine and takes an NGK LKR7BIX-P. A Swift from February 2021 uses the K12N DualJet and takes an ILZKR6F11. A Swift from May 2024 uses the three-cylinder Z12E and takes an ILKAR7Z11S. The older Swift 1.3 takes a BKR6EIX. These are not interchangeable, so check your registration year first.

Are iridium spark plugs better for E20 petrol?

Yes, and the case for iridium does not depend on the fuel at all. An iridium plug fires a stronger spark at a lower voltage and holds its gap far longer than nickel, which is worth having on E20, on E10, or on any blend the mandate moves to next. E20 simply raises the stakes: ethanol runs slightly leaner and carries less energy per litre, so a tired spark shows up as rough idling or lost mileage sooner than it used to, especially on older cars. Iridium is not a cure for ethanol and will not fix ageing fuel lines, but it takes ignition off the list of possible problems for years.

Does a higher heat range number mean a hotter plug?

No, and this catches people out. On NGK plugs a higher number means a colder plug, so a BKR6EIX runs colder than a BKR5EIX. Denso numbers its plugs the opposite way. Always fit the heat range your manufacturer specified, because too hot a plug risks pre-ignition and too cold a plug fouls up on short city trips.

Is there an iridium spark plug for the Maruti Ertiga, XL6 or S-Cross 1.5?

Not through the NGK aftermarket. Those cars use the K15B engine, and NGK India offers only the KR6A-10 conventional plug for them. The IKR6G11 that appears in search results is genuine and correct for the car, but it is supplied as a Maruti Genuine part rather than an NGK aftermarket one, so a Maruti dealer is the right route. We would rather tell you that than sell you an approximate fit.

Do I need to gap an iridium spark plug?

Usually not. Iridium plugs are supplied pre-gapped for the application, and the trailing number in the part code, such as the 11 in BKR6EIX-11, is the gap in tenths of a millimetre. The fine centre electrode is not designed to be bent or levered against, so if you check the gap, never apply force to the centre electrode.

How long do iridium spark plugs last in a car?

Considerably longer than nickel, because the hard, fine electrode resists erosion and holds its gap. Follow the replacement interval in your owner's manual, since that is what protects your warranty, and always replace with the exact part number specified for your engine.

What happens if I fit the wrong reach spark plug?

Reach is how far the threaded section extends into the cylinder head, and getting it wrong is the one spark plug mistake that can cause real damage. A plug that is too long protrudes into the combustion chamber, which at best causes rough running and pre-ignition and at worst can contact the piston. A plug that is too short leaves exposed threads that carbon up. Maruti 1.2 engines from around October 2014 use a 26.5mm reach, while earlier Swifts and all K15B 1.5 cars use 19mm.
