Liqui Moly Cera Tec vs MoS2 (2026): Which Oil Additive Your Engine Actually Needs

Cera Tec suits a modern engine on long intervals, MoS2 an older or harder-worked one. Prices, the wet-clutch warning, and which to pick.

If your engine is modern, healthy and on a long service interval, Cera Tec is the one to buy: its ceramic particles stay suspended in the oil and a single 300 ml dose is rated for roughly 50,000 km. If the engine is older, higher-mileage or worked hard, the classic MoS2 Oil Additive lays down a thicker sliding film for less money, but it is dosed every oil change. Neither of these two belongs in a motorcycle with an oil-bath wet clutch, and that is the one mistake worth avoiding.

What is the actual difference between Cera Tec and MoS2?

Both are friction and wear additives that go into engine oil, and both are genuine Liqui Moly products made in Germany. What separates them is the lubricant itself.

MoS2 Oil Additive (article 7178) carries molybdenum disulfide, a solid lubricant, into the oil circuit. The particles bond to metal surfaces and fill in microscopic roughness, building a tough sliding film that keeps working even if oil supply is briefly interrupted. It is long-established chemistry with a large following among owners of older engines, and it is miscible with all commercial mineral and synthetic oils.

Cera Tec (article 3721) uses ceramic boron-nitride particles instead. They are chemically and thermally stable, stay in suspension rather than settling out, and hold up under high load and high temperature. The practical consequence is service life: Liqui Moly rates one bottle as effective for approximately 50,000 km, where MoS2 is added with each oil change.

So the choice is less about which is stronger and more about which suits the engine you are putting it in, and how often you want to think about it.

Which one should you choose?

Your engine Better pick Why
Modern petrol or diesel car, well maintained Cera Tec Stays in suspension, one dose covers a long interval
Older or high-mileage engine, a little noisy MoS2 Thicker sliding film, lower cost per bottle
Car driven hard, towing, or in heavy traffic heat Cera Tec Built to hold up under sustained load and temperature
You want to dose once and forget it Cera Tec Rated around 50,000 km per bottle
Motorcycle with a wet clutch Neither of these See the motorcycle section below

Can you use either one in a motorcycle?

Not these two. Both the 300 ml Cera Tec and the 200 ml MoS2 Oil Additive are intended for car and 4-stroke petrol or diesel engines, and the pack guidance for both says they are not recommended for motorcycles with an oil-bath wet clutch.

The reason is mechanical rather than chemical. In most motorcycles the clutch runs in the same oil as the engine and relies on friction between its plates to grip. An additive whose whole purpose is to reduce friction can, in the wrong application, let those plates slip under load.

Liqui Moly makes a motorcycle-specific answer for this: the Motorbike MoS2 Shooter, a 20 ml shot dosed for a single bike oil fill at Rs 405. Even with that one, if your bike runs an oil-bath wet clutch, confirm that an oil additive is permitted for your model before using it. Tell us your bike and we will help with fitment guidance.

What do they cost in India?

Product Size Treats Price
Cera Tec (3721) 300 ml Up to 5 L of oil, around 50,000 km Rs 2,199
MoS2 Oil Additive (7178) 200 ml Roughly 5 L of oil, per oil change Rs 1,395
Motorbike MoS2 Shooter (3444) 20 ml One motorcycle oil fill Rs 405

The sticker price makes MoS2 look like the cheaper option, and per bottle it is. Over a service life it usually is not. If your car takes an oil change every 10,000 km, covering 50,000 km with MoS2 means five bottles, about Rs 6,975. One bottle of Cera Tec covers the same distance for Rs 2,199. Adjust that for your own interval before deciding, because a shorter interval widens the gap further.

Do oil additives actually work?

They do something specific, and it is worth being clear about what that is. A friction modifier reduces metal-to-metal contact and can make an engine run a little smoother and quieter. It is not a repair, and this is where most disappointment comes from.

An additive will not restore compression on a worn bore, silence a failing tappet, cure an oil leak or make up for a skipped oil change. It works best where there is the least to fix: a mechanically healthy engine, fresh oil of the correct grade, and the dose added at the oil change rather than poured into tired oil near the end of its life.

Treat it as protection for an engine you intend to keep, not as a fix for one that is already complaining.

Can you use Cera Tec and MoS2 together?

No, and there is no benefit in trying. Both do the same job by different means, and doubling up on friction modifiers in one oil fill is not how either is dosed. Pick the one that matches your engine, add it at the oil change, and leave it at that until the next one.

How do you add it properly?

Add the additive to warm oil at an oil change, not to oil that is about to be drained. If the engine has been on long intervals or has visible sludge, clean it first: Engine Flush Plus at Rs 1,115 goes into the old oil before draining, so the fresh fill and the additive are not immediately working against old deposits.

The order that makes sense is flush, drain, fill with the correct grade, then add the friction modifier. Follow the dosing printed on each pack, and check the full current specification on the bottle, since Liqui Moly updates approvals over time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Liqui Moly Cera Tec actually work?

It does what a ceramic friction modifier is designed to do: reduce metal-to-metal contact so the engine runs smoother and wears less. Owners most often report quieter running and a slightly freer feel. It will not repair existing mechanical wear, so expectations should sit with protection rather than restoration.

What does Cera Tec do?

It suspends ceramic boron-nitride particles in your engine oil. Those particles lay down a protective layer on wear surfaces that resists extreme pressure and temperature, lowering running friction across the engine. One 300 ml bottle treats up to 5 litres of oil.

How often should I use Cera Tec?

Liqui Moly rates one bottle as effective for approximately 50,000 km, so for most owners that is a single dose covering several oil changes. Add it to fresh oil at an oil change rather than partway through an interval.

Is Cera Tec safe for a diesel engine?

Cera Tec is intended for 4-stroke petrol and diesel engines and is miscible with all commercial mineral and synthetic motor oils. The full current specification is printed on the pack, so check it against the requirements for your vehicle, and tell us your car if you want help with fitment guidance.

Can I use Cera Tec in my motorcycle?

Not the 300 ml Cera Tec if your motorcycle has an oil-bath wet clutch, because a friction modifier in shared engine and clutch oil can allow the clutch to slip. The Motorbike MoS2 Shooter is the motorcycle-specific option, and even then confirm an oil additive is permitted for your model first.

Is MoS2 bad for modern engines?

MoS2 is a solid lubricant rather than a chemical one, which is why it is more commonly chosen for older and harder-worked engines. For a modern car on long service intervals, Cera Tec is the more suitable of the two. If your vehicle maker restricts solid additives, follow that guidance.

Cera Tec or MoS2, which is better?

Neither is better in the abstract. Cera Tec suits a modern, healthy engine and a long interval, and works out cheaper across 50,000 km. MoS2 suits an older or noisier engine and costs less per bottle. Match the product to the engine rather than to the price.

Both are stocked as genuine Liqui Moly, made in Germany. You can see the full range in Liqui Moly Lubricants and Care.
